Panel discussion at the Spring Conference 2024 in Antalya, Türkiye, with speakers seated on stage in front of a large conference screen

From 5 to 8 May, the annual “Spring Conference” took place in Antalya, Turkey, bringing together data protection experts and representatives of supervisory authorities from across Europe. The Data State Inspectorate of Latvia was represented at the conference by Deputy Director Lāsma Dilba, who moderated the panel discussion “The Future of Data Protection Authorities”, which was dedicated to the development perspectives of these authorities over the next 5–10 years.

The panel addressed current challenges faced by data protection authorities in a rapidly changing digital environment. The discussion placed particular emphasis on effective supervision, ensuring clear and accessible guidance, cross-border cooperation, as well as the implementation of new obligations arising from the expanded digital regulatory framework of the European Union. Practical challenges were also highlighted, namely resource availability, the growing number of complaints, and the handling of increasingly complex, technology-driven cases.

The panel discussion also explored what constitutes effective operation of data protection authorities, how to improve cooperation mechanisms, and how to define the boundaries of competence in situations where personal data is used in the context of broader risks, such as fraud or cybersecurity incidents.

Participation in the conference demonstrates Latvia’s active involvement in international discussions on the future of data protection and provides an opportunity to adopt best practices, strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of supervisory authorities. It is worth noting that in 2024, this conference was held in Riga.
