The objective of the Inspectorate is to protect fundamental human rights and freedoms in the field of data protection.

Main functions of the Inspectorate:

  1. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data in accordance with regulatory enactments that regulate the field of processing and protection of personal data, biometric data processing, human genome research, the use of human organs in medicine, as well as the use of human organs and dead human bodies for medical studies, and regulatory enactments regulating the field of extrajudicial debt recovery.
  2. Ensuring a proficiency check of data protection officers and maintaining a list of data protection officers who have passed the qualification examination.
  3. Provision of an opinion on the conformity of data processing systems to be established in public administration institutions with the requirements of regulatory enactments.
  4. Supervision of the processing of personal data of natural persons as laid down in the Law on the Processing of Personal Data in Criminal Proceedings and Administrative Violation Proceedings.
  5. Supervision of the protection of personal data in the field of electronic communications. Supervision of the processing of personal data of natural persons as provided for in the Law on the processing of aircraft passenger data.
  6. Monitoring the movement of information society services and the prohibition on sending commercial communications. Providing an opinion to the Security Incidents Response Institution on the description of the planned processing and protection of personal data regarding the processing of personal data that are not related to the prevention of the incident, in connection with which such data were obtained, in accordance with the Information Technology Security Law.
  7. Forwarding the data subject’s request to the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust).
  8. Licensing and supervision of the operation of the credit bureau.
  9. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data carried out within the framework of the Schengen Information System, including ensuring the representation of Latvia in the supervisory institution.
  10. Supervision of the processing of natural personal data required by the Law on the Operation of the Schengen Information System.
  11. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data carried out within the framework of Europol’s information system, including ensuring the representation of Latvia in the supervisory institution.
  12. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data carried out within the framework of the Visa Information System, including ensuring the representation of Latvia in the supervisory institution.
  13. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data carried out within the framework of the Customs Information System, including ensuring the representation of Latvia in the supervisory institution.
  14. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data carried out within the framework of the Visa Information System, including ensuring Latvia's representation in the supervisory institution.
  15. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data carried out within the framework of the Customs Information System, including ensuring Latvia's representation in the supervisory institution.
  16. Monitoring of the processing and protection of personal data under the European Vehicle and Driving License Information System.
  17. Representation of Latvia in the Advisory Committee in accordance with the 1981 Convention for the Protection of Individuals regarding Automatic Processing of Personal Data.
  18. Supervision of the processing and protection of personal data carried out within the framework of the Eurodac Information System, including ensuring Latvia's representation in the supervisory institution.
